On Saturday, 28 June, the Alliance Française de Kandy hosted a thoughtful and engaging discussion on Stay, Daughter by Yasmin Azad, bringing together an attentive group of participants.
The session, facilitated by Widya Kumarasinghe and Thadini Liyanage of Everystory Sri Lanka, guided a grounded and reflective conversation on the memoir’s central themes—intergenerational expectations, personal freedom, and the complexities of growing up within a conservative community.
Participants explored Yasmin’s navigation of identity as a young Muslim girl in 1960s Galle Fort, reflecting on the tensions between tradition and modernity and how these dynamics continue to shape contemporary Sri Lanka. The discussion created a space for collective learning, attentive listening, and the exchange of diverse perspectives.
The Sister Library is currently open to the public at the newly launched library of the Alliance Française de Kandy. This project is funded by the Franco-German Cultural Fund, established in 2003 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty of friendship between France and Germany, supporting cultural and artistic projects that promote Franco-German cooperation.
