In Memoriam – Dr Jacques Soulié
It is with deep sadness that the Alliance Française de Kandy, together with the network of Alliances Françaises in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, announces the passing of Dr Jacques Soulié, who left us on Saturday evening. We extend our heartfelt condolences and compassion to his family and loved ones.
The Alliance Française de Kandy owes a great deal to this remarkable man. Dr Soulié served as Director of the Alliance from 2002 to 2012, and as an active committee member from 2012 to 2017. He also taught at the University of Peradeniya from 1996 to 2010 as a visiting professor in psychiatry and French literature.
Under his leadership, the Alliance Française moved into its current premises a building he helped acquire and which remains a cornerstone of our institution’s identity. A psychiatrist by training but deeply passionate about literature, history, and the arts, Dr Soulié founded the Suriyakantha Cultural Centre in 2015. This centre, a bridge between cultures, reflects his profound love for Sri Lanka and its heritage, and was one of his most cherished projects, set to celebrate its tenth anniversary this year.
Brilliant, charismatic, and immensely knowledgeable, Dr Soulié always maintained strong ties with the Alliance Française de Kandy, the wider network in Sri Lanka, and all those who make our community flourish. He was respected and loved by all.
He leaves behind a cultural and human legacy of great value. We will continue his work with loyalty and gratitude.
Rest in peace, Dr Jacques Soulié.
