A l’occasion de la journée internationale du livre pour enfants, l’Alliance Française de Kandy a eu l’honneur de recevoir l’artiste Deneth Piumakshi Wedaarachchige.
Le travail de cette artiste Sri Lankaise multidisciplinaire basée en France est très souvent exposé et salué en Europe (France, Suisse, Allemagne).
Dans son travail multidisciplinaire, elle utilise la photographie, l’audio et la vidéo, la peinture et l’impression sur textile, ainsi que la broderie sur différentes surfaces. Les sujets sur lesquels elle se concentre sont les histoires coloniales oubliées, l’immigration, la diaspora sri-lankaise, l’injustice des travailleuses immigrées, les récits d’enfants grandissant dans des zones de guerre et de conflits, et le féminisme silencieux. Sa pratique artistique se situe le long d’une fine ligne qui sépare l’art et l’activisme ; elle a l’intention de jouer avec cette tension. Elle travaille avec des médiums tels que les installations audio, vidéo et photographiques, la broderie sur différentes surfaces, les travaux textiles et la performance.
Elle a récemment publié un livre pour enfants, écrit en français et en anglais, intitulé “Kamadhenu, la mère de toutes les vaches, rend visite à la Chapelle d’Abondance”.
Recevoir une artiste de cette renommée au sein de l’Alliance Française fut un honneur. 9 enfants ont pris part à son atelier du samedi 6 avril 2024 et ont pu découvrir le récit émouvant, au message profond, des personnages de “Kamadhenu, la mère de toutes les vaches, rend visite à la Chapelle d’Abondance”. Guidés parDeneth Piumakshi Wedaarachchige, les enfants ont ensuite été invités à créer leur propre personnage imaginaire, à le dessiner, et à raconter son histoire.

On the occasion of the International Children’s Book Day, the Alliance Française de Kandy had the honor of hosting the artist Deneth Piumakshi Wedaarachchige.
The work of this multidisciplinary Sri Lankan artist based in France is often exhibited and acclaimed in Europe (France, Switzerland, Germany).
In her multidisciplinary work she uses photography, audio and video, painting and printing on textile and embroidery on different surfaces. The subjects that she focuses are forgotten Colonial histories, Immigration, Sri Lankan diaspora, injustice of women immigrant workers, stories of children growing up in war and conflicts zones and silence feminists. Her artistic practice runs along a thin line which separates art and activism; it is her intend to play with that tension. She works with medium such as Audio, Video & photography installations, Embroidery on different surfaces, textile works and performance.
She recently published a children’s book, written in French and English, titled “Kamadhenu, cow mother of all cows, visits the Chapelle d’Abondance”.
Welcoming an artist of such renown to the Alliance Française was an honor. 9 children participated in her workshop on Saturday, April 6, 2024, where they were able to discover the moving story, with a profound message, of the characters from “Kamadhenu, cow mother of all cows, visits the Chapelle d’Abondance”. Guided by Deneth Piumakshi Wedaarachchige , the children were then invited to create their own imaginary character, draw it, and tell its story.
